As we wind down our wedding season, our flower field feels ready to relax as well. We slowly start uprooting our dahlia tubers to put into storage for the winter. We harvest the last blooms and pull the remaining plants from their beds to rest in the compost. The irrigation gets flushed and the remaining bits of pruning is completed.

It’s a beautiful process, gardening. Living seasonally has always been very special to me and I am always inspired by the way a garden listens to all of the parts of the year so intently.
This year, I hear the seasons even more carefully as I watch my baby girl grow alongside the flowers. When we brought her home, the garden was quiet and sleepy. As she has grown, the garden and her have followed each other in tandem. She grows a little longer, the Zinnias grow a little longer. She begins to crawl, the roses reach out even further than before. She learns to stand on her own, the dahlias unfold in the most magnificent ways. And now, we turn back to a slower part of the year and my little one wears her first overalls and I bundle her a little more when we go for our strolls.

These little (and yet, not so little) things remind me to fully breathe in each season to their fullest and find the celebration in all of life’s moments. To everything, there is a season…
Soon, we will compost and cover the beds and let them rest. And before we know it, we will be planting out seedlings all over again! But for now, rest!
